Best of the Granite Belt
As director of a travel website which specialises in luxury escapes, Sally Scott is away
from home every second week and she’s selective about where she spends the night.
Recently she took a break in southern Queensland’s Granite Belt, just as the apple and
grape harvest was hitting its stride, and found the country charm irresistible – from tea
and pikelets at the CWA next door to the pub and local gourmet treats at Brinx Deli
(

) to chatty winemakers keen talk up their own home brews over a cuppa.
A good night’s rest is assured at Alure Boutique Villas where luxury tents bring a
touch of “glamping” to Stanthorpe, each with a fireplace (yes, inside!), outdoor spa, big
screen TV and local gourmet provisions for a home-made picnic breakfast.
More good reasons to go: the food, wine and fun entertainment at Elevated Taste on
5 and 6 April 2014; and the exhibition of 150 works, including this year’s $20,000 award
winner, in the Stanthorpe Art Festival showing until 13 April at the Stanthorpe Regional
Art Gallery.

Champagne high in Paris
March marks a special milestone for the Eiffel Tower, completed
125 years ago as the dramatic entrance to the World’s Fair in
Paris in 1889. Today it still offers the best view of the city,
earning it the title of ‘most-visited paid monument in the
world’. Thankfully, visitors no longer have to climb the 1710
steps to the top as VIPs did on the day of its official opening
(lifts were installed only months later) and modern-day tourists
can also enjoy the more recent addition of a Champagne
Bar on the top level. See this and more of the best of Paris
with packages from $2229 per person valid for sale until 30
September 2014 (and travel 4-31 October 2014).

Night surfing in Bali
Only months after its first anniversary, Komune Resort & Beach Club at Keramas on Bali’s east
coast has added 10 new junior suites to its accommodation (at a special opening rate of $140
per night) and luxury villas will be launched by the end of the year.
The resort overlooks a reef wave break that attracts world class surfers, including one-time
Aussie champion Luke Egan who is part-owner of the resort. “Keramas is the most high
performance wave in Bali so the action in the water is always electric,” he says. And not only in the
daytime. Night surfing is the cool new way to catch a wave and guests can watch the locals do it
under lights in style or have a bash for $20 an hour from 7pm to midnight. Or time your travel to
catch the next Night Surfing Spectacular on 18 May when some of the best aerial pro-surfers will
put on a show to a DJ soundtrack in front of the Beach Club.
