WHAT’S ON
B
risbane has scored yet another coup in the arts world with American
Ballet Theatre to make its first and only Australian appearance at
Queensland Performing Arts Centre, South Bank, from 28 August
to 7 September. American Ballet Theatre has performed in more than 42
countries in its 70-year history yet this will be its first visit to Australia.
The company has been invited to perform as part of QPAC’s International
Series (which previously brought the Bolshoi Ballet to Brisbane).
Classical ballet fans will be thrilled to see
Swan Lake
on the program
but dance aficionados will be looking closely at the
Three Masterpieces
that
also will be part of the repertoire – three one-act ballets by three brilliant
choreographers.
Twyla Tharp is one who has earned her reputation over more than 135
choreographed ballets during her career, not counting her work on films
and Broadway shows. Everyone will delight in
Fancy Free
, a ballet created
in 1944 by one of ABT’s principal dancers and choreographers, the late
Jerome Robbins. (His career included work on films
West Side Story, The
King and I
and
Fiddler on the Roof
). The sheer energy of the performance
and the acrobatic skill of the dancers is captivating.
Fancy Free
was Robbins’ first success as a choreographer and shows
what happens to three sailors on a hot summer night in New York during
World War II, the two girls they meet, the ensuing competition, and the
tough good humour of wartime comradeship. The piece has been regarded
as a seminal work, presenting a mix of old and new dance that widely
influenced developments in theatre and ballet in the US. New York critics
called it “a tremendous slice of dance theatre”.
Alexei Ratmansky, formerly the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet,
also directs a piece called the
Seven Sonatas
.
The entire ensemble of 90 dancers will be coming to Brisbane.
At Lyric Theatre, QPAC, South Bank, 28 August to 7 September 2014.

Bob Dylan
An early draft of his lyrics to ‘Like a Rolling
Stone’ sold at auction recently for more than
$2 million, confirming Bob Dylan’s status
as one of the most influential musicians of
our time. We can only hope it will be part
of his repertoire when he lands at Brisbane
Convention and Exhibition Centre, South
Bank, for one performance only on 25 August
2014. See
Courtney Love
Once described by
Rolling Stone
as the
most controversial woman in the history
of rock, Courtney Love, now 50, is touring
Australia solo this time around and will
rock Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane on 20
August 2014 on the back of her latest single
release ‘You Know My Name/Wedding
