from the roof

The Stock

Exchange Hotel

Under the stewardship of new

owners and a new manager the

city central rooftop bar has had

a makeover ripe for summertime

Sunday garden parties. While DJs

spin the tunes, cocktails are mixed

for two and the pop-up barbecue

serves up a gourmet grill. It’s the hot

spot to cool off after the working

week and buzzing on Friday nights

when craft beers and bistro food are

the order of the day (or night).

Open Monday to Thursday 11am-

3am; Friday 11am-5am; Saturday

12pm-5am; Sunday 12pm until late

at 131 Edward Street, Brisbane. See

or call 3257 3644 for information.

Limes Hotel

There’s a Miami pool bar vibe in

this rejuvenated rooftop bar. What’s

new? There’s ‘turf’ underfoot,

giving the space a garden terrace

feel, with hanging vines, wire stools

and bench seating on one side and

playful plunge pools and ottoman

seating on the other. In true Aussie

style the barbecue will be fired up

on summer Sundays and open-air

movies screen on Wednesday and

Thursday nights. Basic bar food

snacks complement the cocktail jugs

and a compact drinks menu.

Open Wednesday to Sunday

from 5pm at 142 Constance

Street, Fortitude Valley. See

or call

3852 9000 for information.

Dandy’s Rooftop

The folks at the Fox Hotel on

the south side of the river like to

think their Dandy’s Rooftop bar

is providing a little bit of backyard

missing from so many city homes

these days. Creating the atmosphere

are hanging bird cages, beach

umbrellas, technicolour garden

furniture and the ubiquitous grass-

green floor. Get in the spirit of

the Brisbane International tennis

tournament (4-11 January) with

the marshmallow-infused vodka

cocktail named Anna Kournikova!

Open Friday from 4pm until late;

Saturday and Sunday 2pm until

late at 71-73 Melbourne Street,

South Brisbane. Call 3844 2833

or see

Up at Constance

Going up is half the fun of getting

there – to the rooftop bar called Up,

that is. Enter via a graffiti-splashed

side alley and a glass lift to get to the

open eyrie that sits above the Valley’s

trendy new Tryp Hotel. Lauded chef

William Turnbull is behind the bar

menu and the buzzing Chur burger

bar downstairs. Food plates at Up

are designed to share and so, too, are

selected cocktails including the Tryp

House Punch (which comes with 4

glasses) and the Raspberry Orange

Ice Tea served in a carafe.

Open Thursday to Sunday 5pm-12

midnight at 14-20 Constance

Street, Fortitude Valley. See

or call

3319 7888 for information.

Soleil Bar

True to its name Soleil Bar

celebrates the sun all day long

and beyond with easy eats and

cooling beverages available beside

the pool from 7am to supper time.

Following a recent reinvention the

bar is even smarter, the cocktails

more adventurous and a massive

ceiling screen showing moving

vision of space is mesmerising.

OK, it’s not really the rooftop but

the pool deck offers an abstract

cityscape and open air breezes

that make this a cool and casual

hangout day into night.

Open seven days from 7am until

late (evening food orders until

10pm) at podium level, Rydges

Hotel, corner Grey and Glenelg

Streets, South Bank. Call 3364

0838 or see
