Where do you live?
Bowen Hills, in a tiny two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment right next
to railway lines.
What do you like most about your neighbourhood?
The proximity to everything. I am 400 metres from my training pool
(Fortitude Valley Pool), 600 metres from a train station, 500 metres from
the CityGlider Bus Stop, 1km from weekend markets and Chinatown,
2km from Queen Street Mall and 3km from South Bank restaurants and
cinemas. It really is the ideal place for me at the moment.
Where do you always take visitors when they come to Brisbane?
I always take them to South Bank. When my family and I moved here in
2001 it was one of the first places we visited. I remember being so taken
with the idea of a man-made beach in the middle of the city. Now I also
appreciate the good restaurants, markets, cinemas and museums, it really
has something for everyone.
What’s your hot tip for visitors?
On the first Sunday of every month South Bank hosts the Young Designers
Markets. This is in addition to their usual weekend markets and allows
up-and-coming designers (usually university students) a chance to kick-
start their business. You can get some really cool, unique items for very
What’s your favourite thing to do on the weekend?
Depending on what phase of training we are in, my weekend activities vary
from sleeping all day to going out and exploring the city. On the days when
I do have some energy, I love heading out for a walk along the river or
window shopping along James Street in the Valley.
Favourite place for coffee?
I really love Belle Époque (at Emporium, 1000 Ann Street, Fortitude
Valley). It is a beautiful little French café and patisserie. It is within easy
walking distance of my apartment, has great service, stunning décor and
absolutely divine macaroons!
Favourite place for breakfast?
Buzz café, again in Emporium, is my favourite breakfast spot. The quality
of the food is impeccable. My favourite breakfast dish is the Buzz Breakfast
Plate with poached eggs, avocado, Roma tomato, Haloumi cheese, rocket,
fresh lemon and sourdough bread.
What is your favourite leisure activity?
I love going to the movies at the Palace cinemas on James Street. On a
Saturday night my sister Bronte [also an Olympic swimmer] and I often
wander down and catch a movie and dinner. These cinemas are particularly
great as they show some of the less mainstream movies and student tickets
are only $8!
