Dirty

Dancing

Patrick Swayze is a hard act to follow as Johnny Castle, the role he

made his own in the 1987 film

Dirty Dancing

and which made

the low budget screen story a box-office hit. Townsville performer

Kurt Phelan has been an avid fan since before he started his own

professional career and steps up in the lead role in the new stage

production which opens in Brisbane on 27 May. Also a fan is

Kirby Burgess (seen recently in Network 10’s television series

Wonderland

) who stars in her first lead role on stage as Baby. At the

Lyric Theatre, QPAC, South Brisbane. Tickets from $59.90 (adult,

matinee) plus fees. See

La Traviata

You don’t need to understand Italian, or be an opera aficionado

to enjoy the quintessential love story that is Verdi’s

La Traviata

,

inspired by the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas and recognised

by movie fans in the popular screen production of

Moulin Rouge

who also may recall it was the opera that rich businessman Edward

Lewis (Richard Gere) takes prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts)

to see in the film

Pretty Woman

. Internationally lauded Australian

artists Emma Pearson and Aldo Di Toro will sing the lead roles.

From 7-16 May at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, South Brisbane.

Tickets from $100 (adult) plus fees. See

Peter Pan

Award-winning choreographer Trey McIntyre is also a graduate of

Queensland Ballet artistic director Li Cunxin’s training ground, the

Houston Ballet. His works have since been performed by leading

companies including American Ballet Theatre, New York City

Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet. Now Queensland Ballet will perform

his interpretation of

Peter Pan

, complete with swashbuckling

swordfights, giant puppets and breathtaking flying sequences in a

brilliant mix of dance and theatre which gives J.M. Barrie’s classic

story of the boy who won’t grow up a distinctly modern spirit. From

26 June to 11 July at Playhouse, QPAC, South Brisbane. Tickets $95

(adult) plus fees. See
