BRISBANE AIRPORT NEWS

Vision

forautomall

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) is seeking Expressions of Interest for a joint venture

partner to help realise its new vision for Airport Central – a new automotive precinct with

dealerships, servicing, offices and associated retail in one convenient location at the precinct.

BAC says the Auto Mall concept at the airport precinct will be an Australian first, with

the vision to include a Mark Skaife-designed driving test track. BAC CEO Julieanne Alroe

says the 50-hectare site is a perfect location to provide a world-class facility just 10km from

the CBD. “Our research identified a need in the market for a convenient multi-purpose

automotive destination which will redefine the consumer experience,” she says.

V8 Supercar and Bathurst 1000 champion Mark Skaife says the test track is a unique

concept. “Being able to drive a car straight from the showroom onto a purpose-built test

track, without having to wait at traffic lights and sit in congestion, is fantastic – you don’t

even have to be a car fanatic to appreciate that. It’s a unique way for customers to try out a

new vehicle and a great way for dealerships to sell the features of their cars.”

The test track could be used for special events, car club activities and driver training.

Commercial property agent JLL is managing the Expressions of Interest on behalf of BAC.

SWEET 15

In August Virgin Australia will celebrate 15 years at

Brisbane Airport. In 2000, as Virgin Blue, it set up

its first base at the airport with two aircraft. Today it

operates more than 120 flights in and out of Brisbane

every day, and has a purpose-built maintenance

hangar and training facilities in the airport precinct.

The airline recently announced it has also

established a long haul international cabin crew base, a

long haul international pilot base and a dedicated East

Coast charter operations base in Brisbane. At the time

of the announcement Virgin Australia chief executive

John Borghetti said, “Queensland continues to be a

key market for Virgin Australia and the establishment

of the new bases is testament to that.”

The airline has also recently introduced daily flights

between Brisbane and Los Angeles. “Virgin Australia

now flies from Brisbane direct to more than 40

destinations. The team at Brisbane Airport has always

been supportive of new initiatives, flights and service

improvements. We look forward to the next 15

years and beyond,” says Virgin Australia chief

operating officer Gary Hammes.
