Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) has won the ‘Best Sustainable Development - New Buildings’ category at the 2012 Property Council of Australia Innovation and Excellence Awards for its state-of-the-art iseek Communications Data Centre.
BAC Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe said the award is testament to Brisbane Airport’s commitment to sustainable development.
“We worked closely with our tenant iseek Communications to utilise their industry knowledge and expertise of emerging technologies in the building design phase.
“We are committed to delivering a world-class, prosperous and sustainable airport business ‘community’ for Brisbane and this Data Centre is a prime example of our commitment,” Ms Alroe said.
BAC’s Property Division BNE Property developed the centre, which is the most architecturally significant and energy efficient data centre in Australia.BNE Property General Manager Renaye Peters said the facility established a new industry standard for the next generation of green data centres.
“The data centre was strategically designed to reduce its carbon footprint, power consumption and energy through design and technology innovations,” Ms Peters said.
“It was a challenge as data centres require high power usage to function - making this award an outstanding achievement for all involved.”
The data centre achieved a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.3 by The Green Grid, which is one of the lowest power usage indexes in Australia.Ms Peters said sustainable development is a key element of BAC’s Property Development Master Plan, released recently to guide the transformation of developable airport land over the next 50 years.
“BAC aims to provide infrastructure to facilitate sustainable development at building, precinct and community levels to help Brisbane Airport become Australia’s green airport,” she said.
The development team included BNE Property’s partner and tenant, iseek Communications, KP Architects and Multi Span Australia.
