We understand that creativity is more than a pastime – it’s a vital part of childhood learning, emotional expression, and community connection. This is why Brisbane Airport proudly supports organisations that make art and creative activities more accessible to kids and families.
Two of these partnerships – with Museum of Brisbane (MoB) and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) – are helping Brisbane’s children’s imaginations soar higher than a plane.
Tucked inside Museum of Brisbane, a colourful new hub called The Creative Space is buzzing with energy. MoB designs all its exhibitions and events with the whole family in mind, and this vibrant new hub now provides a dedicated space for families, children, and visitors of all ages and abilities to explore, imagine, and create.
The first iteration of this new space, called Micro Museum, is open now, marking the beginning of what will be a long-term, evolving initiative brought to life with Brisbane Airport as a Major Partner.
Inspired by the exhibition Precious, in this space, you are the curator. Visitors can select, sort and arrange a wide array of items, many of which are second-hand or vintage and hold memories.
The Creative Space represents an exciting step forward for the Museum, with a permanent, hands-on environment where art, play, and learning blend seamlessly.
“The Creative Space and Micro Museum provide a welcoming and inclusive space for all ages, but especially the family and children audience,” says Museum of Brisbane Engagement Lead, Simone Reilly.
The idea came from recognising the opportunity to provide a space for participatory experiences that encourage kids (and adults) to experiment and discover at their own pace.
“There’s no one way to engage with the activities, we want them to be really open-ended,” explains Simone.
Simone discusses that The Creative Space represents a shift in how the Museum sees creativity as a whole; “This Creative Space was built intentionally to spark creativity and imagination.”
Crucially, none of this would have been possible without Brisbane Airport’s partnership. Simone explains, “Brisbane Airport has championed this project right from the start. Its support will be instrumental in our continuing this legacy.”
Already, the space is having a ripple effect beyond its walls, Simone explains, “The children feel a sense of belonging in, not just The Creative Space, but hopefully in every single space in the Museum now.”
For Simone and the MoB team, supporting children and families isn’t simply about providing a space, it’s about giving children a voice and a sense of agency. “It’s really important for museums and galleries to have spaces that foster children’s creativity. We’re living in a world where kids will need to have divergent thinking, the creativity to solve problems, and different ways to self-represent.”
Across the river, Brisbane Airport’s partnership with QAGOMA’s Art Box for Kids program is another example of creativity made accessible and sustainable.
Developed by QAGOMA’s Children’s Art Centre, Art Box for Kids is a new initiative that encourages children to explore their creativity through hands-on artmaking in direct connection to contemporary artists and their ideas.
“The active participation engages children and their intellect with a diverse range of contemporary ideas and cultures," says Laura Mudge, Senior Program Officer.
The program is built on accessibility and sustainability. Wherever possible, the activities utilise recycled or repurposed materials and everyday items.
“Part of what makes Art Box for Kids accessible is the idea that you don’t need special or expensive art materials to be creative,” Tamsin Cull, Head of Public Engagement at QAGOMA explains.
By prioritising accessibility and sustainability, Art Box for Kids not only reduces waste, but also sends an empowering message that creativity isn’t about resources, it’s about imagination.
The program also extends beyond the gallery walls - anyone who isn’t able to travel to the Gallery can access the artist video with step-by-step activity instructions online.
Many parents have shared heartfelt feedback about the program’s positive impact on their children’s wellbeing.
“It’s amazing how many people comment really directly on the wellbeing benefits of engaging in these hands-on activities,” Tamsin states.
At its core, Art Box for Kids embodies QAGOMA’s mission to make creativity inclusive and meaningful.
“Through creating a direct connection between children and artists, you break down barriers and introduce children to art in very meaningful ways,” Laura describes.
By partnering with initiatives like The Creative Space and Art Box for Kids, Brisbane Airport is supporting making creativity a shared experience that belongs to everyone, regardless of age or ability.
