It takes a village: How Baby Give Back is supporting Queensland families
What if something as simple as a ground-level storage shed could change what is possible for families with young children across Queensland?
Baby Give Back is a Queensland charity providing quality clothing, nappies and essentials to families doing it tough, giving young children an equal start in life. The charity works in close partnership with support services such as midwives, child health nurses and family support workers who walk alongside families with children aged five and under through life’s tougher seasons.
Tiffany Rose, Chief Engagement Officer at Baby Give Back, notes the organisation has ambitious goals to support more families across Queensland.
“Our 2030 ambition is to reach 50,000 children. And that's because of that staggering realisation that one in six Queensland children aged five and under are living in poverty,” says Tiffany.
Families are making hard decisions on how to prioritise food, housing and clothing. A box with essentials may only relieve some of the impossible choices, but Baby Give Back believes they offer hope in a small package.
Volunteers curate pre-loved and new baby clothing into Clothing Boxes for children up to age five, as well as Safe Start Boxes containing essentials to welcome new babies in their first few weeks of life.
Importantly, the box does more than meet an immediate need.
“It meets a need, but it also helps build trust between the family and the support worker that they're working with,” says Tiffany.
These support workers are part of what Baby Give Back affectionately calls its village, a network of partners, volunteers and donors who have helped the charity support families of more than 70,000 children since 2016.
The village is continuing to be embraced and leveraged into the Brisbane community with 18 of the Brisbane City councillor offices being donation collection points. At Coorparoo School of Arts, the community's generosity is also making a difference. During a recent volunteer event, more than 25 people sorted over 900 items of children’s clothing and packed 104 Clothing Boxes, each containing a capsule wardrobe.
Some of the youngest volunteers particularly enjoyed the experience, with one proudly calling herself a 'baby stylist' after putting together outfits for the children.
For Tiffany, the impact of these sessions is something worth celebrating.
"You were here for two hours and you helped 104 children," shares Tiffany.
But as Brisbane's generosity grows, so do the logistical challenges.
One of Baby Give Back's existing storage facilities sits several floors above ground level, with donations needing to be transported up and down a lift.
The process is so time-consuming that Tiffany recalls a recent volunteer event where it was easier to drive a van full of supplies up from the Gold Coast than retrieve everything from the Brisbane storage facility.
For a charity looking to expand its reach, something needed to change.
As a 2026 Brisbane Airport Community Giving Fund grant recipient, Baby Give Back has been able to make a practical change that, as Tiffany explains, “genuinely changes what is possible for us in Brisbane.”
The grant from Brisbane Airport has secured 12 months’ of rent for a ground-level shed close to the Coorparoo School of Arts, providing easier access for volunteer events and improved storage and shelving. The new space makes it easier for volunteers to sort donations, pack Clothing Boxes and get essential items into the hands of families who need them.
“It makes all of the logistics around unlocking the community support in Brisbane so much easier,” shares Tiffany.
The opportunity to have an accessible shed means more clothing can be collected and sorted, and more Clothing Boxes packed and going out with support workers to the families that need them. Simply put, a more efficient process behind the scenes means more opportunities to give children a better start in life.
“It creates ripples of impact,” says Tiffany, “Brisbane Airport is part of the fabric of our city, and its support goes beyond providing us with a storage shed. By sharing our story, it’s inviting more of Brisbane to become part of our village and help us reach more families who need support.”
While many families in Brisbane are needing support, Tiffany and her team acknowledge their intent to reach out further. As the growing pipeline for support continues, Baby Give Back invites new volunteers and partnerships to join and be a part of the village.
